Supporters’ Club Notes (20/08/2018)

BEST IN WEST

It was one thing beating Sligo Rovers in the FAI Cup and on their ground. But the big question on all supporters’ minds leading up to the Galway game was, could we maintain that momentum. After all, there was huge motivation for the westerners too because home defeat would surely signal an end to their season’s ambitions.

Thankfully our fears were laid to rest with a controlled display by a determined, spirited Town display. Two well goals each from Jamie Doyle and Dylan McGlade saw us run out comfortable 1-4 winners. Three points bagged and three goal cushion away from home saw the large travelling support leave Galway with Galway Bay sized grins. What was particularly pleasing about this win was that our mounting injury list didn’t seem to impact as much as some feared. We’ll need all the stored up reserve energy as we face more vital league games in September.

ERIC’S GHOST

Quite a few people are now comparing the heroics of Dylan McGlade to those of Eric Lavine. For those who never witnessed Eric’s wizardry, it’s a huge compliment. Sporting media outlets in the west have been marvelling at his silken skills which always make for pleasing reading. Long may Dylan continue to ply his magic while donning the red and black.

WE’RE DUE ONE

This Saturday night we face Shels once again. This time it’s the FAI Cup Second Round. Despite our poor form against the Dublin side, we’ve never been too far behind them. We know from top displays throughout the season that we beat the very best of teams. Well surely we’re due one victory in late August against our visitors. We’ve already put one team wearing red and white to the sword, now it’s time to repeat the dose against Shels. Kick off is 7.30 this Saturday night in what promises to be a real cup cracker.

PICTURE PERFECT

Congratulations to Ken Keenan, a sports photographer based in the west. His timely pic perfectly captured our heroic win over Galway last week end. In it, the beaten home keeper looks distraught as he lies facing his own goal post. Goal scorer Jamie Doyle, his chest puffed out awaits the plaudits from his onrushing, jubilant team mates and in the background the visiting Town supporters jump in noisy celebration with young Burke as cheerleader. Some supporters are seen, out of focus, texting the welcome news. If ever a picture painted a thousand red and black words, this was it. Well done Ken with the keen eye.

MARATHON MAN

It was great to see our long serving, loyal supporter Raymond Grehan picking up his well merited medal on Sunday. The Longford Marathon was run on Sunday last and one of the many participants was our own Ray of sunshine. There may have been many more but he was the only one noticed by this note scribbler.

Sligo Rovers and Longford Town FC face off tonight in the first round of the FAI Cup. In a repeat of last years first round clash, Gerard Lyttle’s side will be hoping to gain revenge after they were sent crashing out of the tournament after extra time at the City Calling Stadium last time out.

Longford won 4-2 after extra time thanks to goals from Karl Chambers, Sam Verdon, Kealan Dillon and Peter Hopkins. Dillon has since moved on to pastures new but Chambers, Verdon and Hopkins are all available for selection.

Looking at both clubs current form, Sligo come into tonight’s game off the back of a 1-0 loss at home to Derry in the EA Sports Cup Semi-Final. Only a few days previously, they had made the trip up to the Brandywell for a league fixture and left with all 3 points. Sitting third from bottom in the Premier Division, the West Coast side have had struggled at times. Much like ourselves in the league, they have shown they can be a good footballing side at times but they have also shown they are vulnerable in areas. With that being said, Sligo boss Gerard Lyttle knows that they can’t underestimate Longford. Speaking to Sligo Rovers official website, he commented: “Longford turned us over last year and we know they are a good side. Neale has them playing a good brand of football, out from the back, and they’re up there challenging for the play-off spots. We know the dangers and I don’t think complacency will be an issue for us. I do feel we’re stronger this year and that’s no disrespect to any players here before. However, it’s up to us to go out and put the performance in. I think if we keep playing like we have been that we can win games and that’s the job for the lads on Saturday.”

Longford Town come into tonight’s game off the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over Athlone Town at the City Calling Stadium last week. While that game went off without a hitch, De Town’s last few weeks have been anything but easy. Losing 4 out of 6 in the month of July, Neale Fenn’s side have struggled to find consistent form in the second half of the season. While we are still very much in the mix for a promotion playoff spot, Longford will need to find the form they showed in beating league leaders UCD 5-1 earlier in the season. Speaking briefly to LTFC.ie, Neale Fenn said he feels Longford can win the game and won’t fear Sligo. Having beaten the home side last year and it being the cup, anything can happen.

In terms of team news for Longford, Jamie Doyle is suspended for the game while Dean Byrne is still on the injury list.

For Sligo, Gary Boylan is the only loss as he is still recovering from a long-term cruciate ligament injury.

Kick off at the Showgrounds tonight is 7.45pm.

Supporters’ Club Notes (11-06-2018)

DROGHEDA ON FRIDAY NIGHT

It’s been a while since we welcomed Drogheda to the City Calling Stadium but they’re our welcome visitors this Friday night. And then we have our mid-season break. And that’s welcome too. Last Friday night was a huge disappointment when we beaten by a single goal by Cabinteely. It brought our long unbeaten run to an unexpected end. The Drogs also lost on Friday night so obviously both teams will be hoping for an improvement. We certainly could do with a three pointer heading into the break. Whether we have new signings during that period remains to be seen but a big crowd on Friday night is really what we want and of course three points at the end of all that shouting and supporting.

INTERNATIONAL ON TUESDAY

Tuesday, 12th June at 4pm sees an international at the City Calling Stadium. The Irish Universities take on their counterparts from France in what should be an intriguing game. These players should have skill as well as brains in abundance so it should be a perfect way to spend an afternoon locally. The game has been below the radar but now you know, we hope to see you there.

SCOREBOARD

Work is in progress in re establishing a new state of the art scoreboard. Setting it all up is more complex than you might think and it’ll probably take us a few weeks to get it up and running properly. And if you’re wondering where the funds came for this latest project. Well, the answer is from the Supporters’ Club and particularly from the car boot sales. Remember when you support the Supporters’ Club, you’re supporting the facilities at the City Calling Stadium.

BREAK TIME

With the players and management taking their summer break, these short notes will be doing likewise. So just that you won’t be overly disappointed when you search for them next week!!

SUCCESS ON THE ROAD

The 2-0 success away to Wexford at the week end rounded off a pretty successful period of travelling the highways and byways of Ireland. The EA SPORTS Cup loss to Cobh was merely a speed bump on a series of long trips. It was league points that we really needed and we couldn’t have done better than six out of six. Jamie Hollywood and Chris Mulhall‘s haul down in Wexford were vital so that we could keep in touch with the teams ahead of us in what is turning out to be a real case of Close Encounters.

SHELS AT HOME

The visit of Shelbourne this Saturday night is a huge game for us. Every Town supporter at the first game of the season between the two clubs, firmly believed we should have had all three precious points, being the better side. A certain former Town player is keeping them ticking over this season with his growing goal tally. His appearance back in the City Calling Stadium will be interesting – to put it mildly. As things stand, we’re a single point behind the Tolka Park outfit. Sitting in 6th place isn’t what anyone expected before the season kicked off, so Saturday night will be the perfect time to kick start our season with a much needed home win. It’s going to be another tense affair. But if we can eliminate giving away silly goals and increase our already growing home support base, then a leap frog could be on the cards. We need to see you there on Saturday night.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

The award for Player of the Month for April will be presented before the game on Saturday night. Aodh Dervin, who is currently injured will be the recipient with Phil Pike, of the Supporters’ Club making the presentation. The presentation is made as the players come off the pitch following their warm up.

HUGE THANKS

The May Bank Holiday Car Boot Sale was simply massive. There were so many people wanting space for stands that we had to turn away plenty of stall holders. Incredibly, by 8.30am the traffic was parked right back to the Westside Cafe. Seasoned car boot attendees maintained that it was the largest crowd ever – and that’s saying something.

A huge thank you to all who supported the event but most especially the group of volunteers who were on duty for long hours on what’s free time for most. Our next one is the June Bank Holiday Monday and remember, the show kicks off at 4am and not 10am.

THAT SONG

Singer/song writer supreme Ultan Conlon was passing the City Calling Stadium on Sunday and simply had to stop to take a photo. Straight away it was gaining likes and comments on his social media platforms including some from here. And why, what’s the connection? The Measure of You is his latest chart topping hit single and includes Longford Town in the lyrics. If you haven’t already done so, just Google or YouTube him. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

MEDIA MATTERS

The standard of communication on social media has soared so far this season. No sooner had we gone ahead against Wexford than the goal was posted as a video on the website. Minutes later it was followed by some excellent still photos from a local Wexford photographer. The days and nights of depending on our national broadcasting service have truly passed. But Padraig Stapleton, James Donnelly and Kieran Burke have played a blinder since being sprung from the social media bench.
