DROGHEDA ON FRIDAY NIGHT

It’s been a while since we welcomed Drogheda to the City Calling Stadium but they’re our welcome visitors this Friday night. And then we have our mid-season break. And that’s welcome too. Last Friday night was a huge disappointment when we beaten by a single goal by Cabinteely. It brought our long unbeaten run to an unexpected end. The Drogs also lost on Friday night so obviously both teams will be hoping for an improvement. We certainly could do with a three pointer heading into the break. Whether we have new signings during that period remains to be seen but a big crowd on Friday night is really what we want and of course three points at the end of all that shouting and supporting.

INTERNATIONAL ON TUESDAY

Tuesday, 12th June at 4pm sees an international at the City Calling Stadium. The Irish Universities take on their counterparts from France in what should be an intriguing game. These players should have skill as well as brains in abundance so it should be a perfect way to spend an afternoon locally. The game has been below the radar but now you know, we hope to see you there.

SCOREBOARD

Work is in progress in re establishing a new state of the art scoreboard. Setting it all up is more complex than you might think and it’ll probably take us a few weeks to get it up and running properly. And if you’re wondering where the funds came for this latest project. Well, the answer is from the Supporters’ Club and particularly from the car boot sales. Remember when you support the Supporters’ Club, you’re supporting the facilities at the City Calling Stadium.

BREAK TIME

With the players and management taking their summer break, these short notes will be doing likewise. So just that you won’t be overly disappointed when you search for them next week!!

A MIGHTY WIN

There’s no point in giving yet another match report here but suffice to say that our 3-2 victory over Galway was a mighty win. A massive thunderstorm and torrential downpour early in the balmy evening, meant that the game could have been called off. What a disaster that would have been. But the ground staff defied the gods and despite an army of midges, the game went ahead.

And what a magnificent game it turned out to be. Most said it was probably our best performance yet. If you were cycling past the City Calling Stadium, you’d have sworn there were at least five thousand at the match, such was the volume of the enthralled supporters on both sides. The electric atmosphere more than matched the lightning storm from earlier. Two nil up and down to ten men at the break meant that there was plenty of animated discussions in the busy clubhouse at half time.

Aodh Dervin’s superb strike was enough to get him an honorary Leaving Cert while Sam Verdon’s dance routine after his smashing goal was especially for his little brother Bobby. We also had the sad sight of a Galway player being stretchered off by the St John Ambulance Crew.

The second half was bound to be a nervous 45 minutes and when the visitors nabbed agoal back, finger nails were in danger of disappearing. The tension reached fever pitch when the Tribesmen were thrown a lifeline with the awarding of a dubious penalty.Even western comments on their own website admitted it was the softest penalty ever awarded to them. But when the ball almost blasted an overflying crow to smithereens, the home crowd bayed with delight. Justice was done. Pauric Connolly’s animated reaction was caught on camera and is nearing viral status. Every player played his heart out. Some thought that Galway, being full time, that their fitness would tell as the game wore on. The second half had more drama on show than the Backstage Theatre. We had fabulous saves, blocks, an other goal each, missed chances and all to a non stop soundtrack of singing and cheering from both Section O and the stand.

On the pitch we were treated to the best display of the season and off pitch, the players and management said they were treated to the best support of the season, so far. It was only when the final whistle finally sounded that we realised we’d be eaten alive with hungry army of midges. But with three points bagged and three goals scored, we could put up with the tiny horrors. One middle ages Galway supporter summed it up perfectly, saying “fair play to ye, that was a mighty win for ye”.

PLENTY OF TRAVEL

On the Bank Holiday Monday we head to Finn Park to face Finn Harps in the rescheduled game and then just four days later, Friday June 8th it’s up to Dublin to play Cabinteely in Stradbrook with a 7.45 kick off. Fulfilling both those dates is demanding for even the most dedicated travelling supporter so spare a thought for the team and management who have to work their socks off as well as travelling. Best of luck and safe travels to all making those demanding and tiresome trips.

MARTY

The news that super supporter Marty Stapleton was hospitalised sent shivers through all those attending the City Calling Stadium on Friday night last. Every one was simply shocked to the core and that included many travelling Galway fans too. Marty is known in every ground throughout the land and his absence from his home ground on Friday night was sorely felt. The win over Galway was for you Marty and hopefully the energy and goodwill generated will find its way to you and have you back among your mates in Section O, as soon as possible. See you soon Marty.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH / MAY

It was a case of two legends meeting when the May Player of the Month award was presented. Pauric Connolly has been supporting De Town for many decades before Sam Verdon was even born. But both are now twinned in their combined passion for De Town as Pauric presented Sam with his deserved award before kick off on Friday night.

WATERBOYS

Any one who arrived early on Friday night witnessed a miracle. With a torrential downpour of biblical proportions creating a mini lake of Galilee, it seemed impossible that the game could proceed. But as soon as the last drops splashed, the ground staff plus a few volunteers swung into action. Armed to the teeth with grapes, brushes and scrapers they set to work with immediate impact. Because the downpour seemed to target the City Calling Stadium only, some fans could hardly believe their eyes on arrival. But fair play to the lads who worked till they were wringing wet with sweat while drying out the pitch.

CAR BOOT SALE

These lines are penned before Monday’s Bank Holiday Car Boot Sale. But a huge and sincere thank you to the mighty volunteers who rise before the sun to ensure everything runs smoothly and successfully.

TOWNS DRAW

There was a good Longford travelling support in Athlone last Friday evening but the resultant 1-1 draw was far from good. Just like our first game against the other Town, we went one behind and had to battle back to get a share of the spoils. Chris Mulhall had a bittersweet night. First he netted the all important equaliser but near the end of the game, he was dismissed by the ref in what appeared to be a very harsh decision. We had travelled expecting all three points; one point was a very disappointing outcome.

GALWAY AT HOME ON FRIDAY

We face Galway this Friday night, June 1st with a 7.45pm kick off time. Yes, you read that correctly, it’s Friday night and not Saturday night. Why? Because we play Finn Harps up in Finn Park on the Monday. It’s the re-scheduled game from a while past when we had rather different weather to this recent balmy spell. Galway are currently 4 points ahead of us, sitting in 3rd position. Drogheda beat them in Galway last week so they’ll be feeling sore and looking for a full haul of points. But then, surely we’ve a point or three to prove too. It’ll be a tough one. See you there on Friday night….Friday remember.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH /MAY

Congratulations to Sam Verdon who is our Player of the Month for May. He’ll receive his trophy before Friday night’s game .

CAR BOOT SALE

The June Bank Holiday Monday has come round very fast. Anyway, as well as the game up in Finn Park, we also have our car boot sale at the City Calling Stadium. It starts when the sun rises and finishes at 3pm. The last one was an incredible success with probably our largest crowd since we started the car boot sales. So, if interested, be on time. And if you’re considering helping out because we always need volunteers, let Liam Healion know this Friday.

HAPPY TONY

While in the midst of London town last Sunday, Tony Ghee received the news that the County team had beaten Meath. It was a welcome gee up for Tony who has to miss a few Town games due to work commitments in the UK. But fair play to Tony, he had already filed his brilliant match reports before jetting off. See you home soon again, Tony.

POINT MADE

In the lead up to this clash against Shelbourne many were saying that we had to win it. With only a point dividing the teams, we knew it was going to be yet another tough one. However, on a dry and windy night in front of a decent crowd, it was the visitors who were in complete control for most of the opening half. The wind seemed to be playing a role with many of our clearances going straight over the stand side line. They had a decent sized travelling support who were just waiting for their opening score. Luckily we held out till the second period but, truth be told, we went in lucky to be on level terms.

Whatever was added to the tea during the break had the desired effect. We played with greater passion and commitment and though a slighter side, no one was found wanting. Those three precious points seemed to have evaporated when a once favourite former Town player rose unchallenged to head Shels in front. The corner that led to their opening goal resulted from two of our own errors and you just hoped that heads wouldn’t drop. Thankfully the opposite happened and the search for an invaluable equaliser became frantic. Dylan McGlade was tormenting the visitors with his silken skillsand at the same time encouraging louder support from the home support. Eventually after a super run, he unleashed a cracker to the left of the despairing Shels’ keeper, who until then had denied us time after time.

There were chances by both teams to grab all three points but the crossbar denied the visitors while Sam Verdon headed wide in front of an open goal. We were hoping for maximum points before the game but most were happy with a share of the spoils and the renewed fighting spirit shown in the second period.

ATHLONE AWAY

There’s sure to be a large Longford Town travelling support. heading down to Athlone this Friday. The game kicks of at 7.45pm on Friday May 25th in Athlone Town Stadium. Our away form of late has been impressive but there can no slip-up on Friday if we’re to maintain any interest in escaping from the lower division. Football can be a funny old sport but the last thing we want is for other teams to be laughing at us if we don’t produce the goods against our near neighbours. It’s only down the road so hopefully we’ll see and hear a good Longford support support the red and black brigade.

AODH’S AWARD

Aodh Dervin was presented with his Supporters’ Club trophy for being Player of the Month for April before last Saturday’s game. Not only has the young lad broken into the first team, he now has become a regular starter. For us golden oldies who remember Aodh as a youngster continuously honing his skills, seeing his rapid improvement being recognised as April’s Player of the Month was particularly satisfying. We wish Aodh all the best in his Leaving Cert next month and maybe it was ironic that a retired teacher from his school, Tom McGuinness who made the presentation.

DE VAN

Roddy Doyle made a bit of a stir when he wrote his novel The Van. However on a local sporting note, it’s Andy Dardis who is certainly who is creating one almighty stir with his fabulously painted van, DeVan. For those who have yet to see the creation, Andy’s van has had a giant club crest added to his already red van and all agree that it’s simply magnificent. It was certainly turning heads on a sun drenched day at the photo shoot outside Esquires last week. One elderly lady from outside the county was heard to remark that the owner must be very religious “driving round with a painting of the cathedral on its side”. In actual fact, it’s hoped that Andy will have whatever is the upcoming game adorning its side panels. As a piece of marketing, it’s simply superb. Happy motoring Andy in De Van.

FLOWER POWER

Red and black supporter Bobby Stocks certainly has green fingers. We’re constantly being complimented for our facilities in the City Calling Stadium and this May, we’re rightly proud of yet another colourful addition. Right round the concourse, Bobby has provided an array of multi coloured hanging baskets which are a joy to behold and certainly not something you’d see in too many stadia. Thanks Bobby, they’re truly a sight for sore sporting eyes.

SPREADING THE WORD

It was a busy week for the local youth organisation The Attic last week. On Saturday night they hosted Hype which saw teens for all over the land arrive in town for a music fest. But earlier in the week, they hosted our management team of Neale Fenn, Daire Doyle and Ger Mooney. The three very wise men were guests of Longford Comhairle na nOg which was an outstanding success. Fair play, once again, to out over-worked chairperson Avril Gilchrist for organising it all.

GET WELL WISHES

The Supporters’ Club would like to send get well wishes to Mel Devlin who is currently recovering in hospital following an operation. Mel, and indeed his entire family have been huge and loyal supporters of Longford Town for decades. Mel, we look forward to seeing back in the City Calling Stadium in the not too distant future. In the meantime, look after yourself – we miss you, we’re all thinking of you and wishing you well.
