MATCH PREVIEW: Longford Town v Shelbourne

Thu May 17th 2018

Preview by Tony Ghee

Longford Town hope to make it three successive league wins on Saturday when they host promotion chasing rivals Shels at the City Calling Stadium on Saturday night. After successive home defeats to UCD and Finn Harps, Neale Fenn’s ‘Red & Black Army’ are back on track after beating Cobh 1-0 and Wexford FC 2-0 on their travels over the last two weeks. There was disappointment inbetween as Town exited the EA Cup losing to Cobh in the quater-final, but after three away games in-a-row, the home faithful should turn out in force to support the Midlanders in a crucial six-pointer against the Tolka Park outfit.

In the earlier league meeting at Tolka Park, Longford finished the game with nine players as both McGlade and Verdon received their marching orders in the last fifteen minutes with Shelbourne winning the game 3-2 with a late, late injury time penalty. David O’Sullivan who spent five seasons at the City Calling Stadium, earning iconic status as the club’s all time record goalscorer, came back to haunt the Town with a hat-trick against his former club that he only left at the end of last season. Sully has continued his rich vein of scoring form with the Dubliners netting ten times already this season.

As well as O’Sullivan, the Town defence will also need to keep an eye on the mercurial James English and the lively Adam Evans in their bid to record a third successive league clean sheet. Since beating Galway 2-0 at Tolka Park towards the end of April, Shelbourne have drawn their last three league matches,1-1 away to Drogheda United, 1-1 at home to leaders UCD, and 0-0 at home to Finn Harps, so they are under pressure to get back to winning ways.

Only three points separate second placed Drogheda from sixth placed Longford Town with Shelbourne in fifth place just a point ahead of Longford and the current top six should be the teams that will battle it out for the title and the three promotion play-off places at the end of the season.

On the team news front, Aodh Dervin and Peter Hopkins have recovered well from their knocks but Saturday’s game is probably too early for them to be risked with the Midlands Derby the following week away to Athlone their likely return fixture, but definitely out of Saturday’s match are Shane O’Connor, Adam O’Connor,  Cian Byrne, and Alan Kehoe.

Kick-off on Saturday evening at the City Calling Stadium is 7.30pm.

Friday 16th March 2018
Kick-off: 7:45pm

Tolka Park

Longford Town head to Tolka Park tonight off the back of a comfortable 3-0 win over Wexford FC at City Calling Stadium last weekend courtesy of goals from two former Shelbourne men; Chris Mulhall (2) & Dylan McGlade. Shels were away to Finn Harps in Ballybofey where they drew 1-1 courtesy of a goal from former Longford Town striker and record goalscorer David O’Sullivan.

Longford go into tonights game currently sitting on top of the First Divison with 5 points, Shels are in 8th place with 1 point. A hard fought 2-2 draw with Cobh Ramblers on opening day followed by last weekends win over Wexford saw Longford top the table. A defeat to UCD on the first day of the league saw Shelbourne head to Finn Harps after the weather cancellations, having not played a home game yet this season.

Alan Kehoe is still out injured from Longford and should not be expected back for a number of weeks. Shelbourne are missing Aidan Collins and Mark Hughes through injury while Alan Byrne and Derek Pendergast return to the squad this week.

Longford Town make the trip to Tolka Park this Friday to face Shelbourne in their third league outing of the season. It will be the Town’s first away game and the first home match for the Dubliners.

The Town are second in the table behind Galway on goal difference on four points after two unbeaten home games yielded a 2 all draw against Cobh and a 3-0 victory over Wexford FC. UCD and Cobh Ramblers also have four points in a four-way tie at the top of the table.

Striker Chris Mulhall is in fine scoring form for Neale Fenn’s charges with 3 goals in the two games to date, including a brace against Wexford FC at the City Calling Stadium last Saturday night.

Peter Hopkins and substitute Dylan McGlade were both outstanding for the ‘Red and Black’ against Wexford and McGlade may have done more than enough to earn a starting place at Tolka Park tomorrow night.

On the injury front, there are no new injury concerns, so the versatile Alan Kehoe is the only absentee from the Town squad ahead of the game.

It will be strange to see the club’s all time record scorer David O’Sullivan lining out for the  opposition after 5 successful seasons with the Midlanders, and the Town faithful will be hoping that the mercurial O’Sullivan who scored against Finn Harps will be part of a Shels team that draw a blank in tomorrow night’s contest.

Shels have a lot of quality in their ranks with an experienced back-line that includes keeper Dean Delaney, Derek Prendergast, Aidan Collins and Dave Mulcahy. Former Longford player, Gavin Boyne, will provide plenty of energy in the midfield sector, while O’Sullivan and James English will provide the main goal scoring threat.

Shelbourne go into the game with just one point from their opening two games after a 2-1  loss away to UCD and a 1 all draw away to Finn Harps.

The game kicks-off at 7.45pm.
