Dylan Grimes’ delicious back heel v Drogheda to make it 1-1.

Sam Verdon headed a real peach of a winning goal with just minutes of normal time remaining.

The celebrations were certainly justified…coming from behind..we deserved the win but we don’t always get what we deserve…..3 vital points and back to second place- yes, for sure, the celebrations were justified.

A few more pics from an action packed game on a warm summer’s evening.

6 long anxious minutes were added – it was helter skelter as the kitchen sink was thrown at us – but this time we held firm for those 3 vital points.

The relief and joy at the sound of the final whistle was clear to see on the faces of players, management and supporters…

Aoife and Ciara Smith were on hand to present Anto Beslin with his June player of the month trophy- two former Town legends were in attendance as well as 2 UEFA officials (hopefully they were suitably impressed with our facilities) and then a few other random pics with which to finish tonight’s photographic round up.

C’mon De Town!!!

MATCH PREVIEW: Longford Town v Drogheda United

Sat Jul 13th 2019

Match Preview by Tony Ghee

Longford Town host Drogheda United at the City Calling Stadium tonight at 7.30pm in a crucial promotion play-off six pointer, as third host second.

After last night’s victory for Bray against Limerick, and Shelbourne’s draw with Cabinteely, De Town are guaranteed to be at least third in the table after tonight’s contest. However, if Longford can make it a hat-trick of league wins over the visitors this evening, the Midlanders will move above Drogheda into second place and to within five points of leaders Shelbourne.

Last weekend, Drogheda recorded a fine 4-2 victory at home to Cobh, while Longford Town endured a disappointing three-one defeat away to Limerick.

Longford won both of the previous league encounters between the sides. Back in March, second-half goals from Dean Byrne, Aaron Dobbs and Peter Hopkins, earned Longford a three-nil triumph at the City Calling Stadium. Then at United Park in early May, Dobbs was again on the mark with the only goal of the match to secure three valuable points for Neale Fenn’s charges.

Longford’s two new signings, Jack Doherty and Dylan Grimes made their Town Debuts against Limerick last weekend, with Doherty starting before being replaced by Grimes on seventy-three minutes.

Town keeper Lee Steacy and defenders Conor Kenna and Anto Breslin have been ever present for the first team this season and will continue to lead the defence tonight with Shane Elworthy and Mick O’Donnell completing the back five.

Carlton Ubaezuonu who was an unused substitute last week is out through injury and Paul O’Connor remains unavailable through injury.

Action from our previous league match v Drogheda United at United Park in May which we won 1-0.

Dylan Grimes signs for De Town!

Thu Jul 4th 2019

Longford Town FC are delighted to announce that former Shelbourne player Dylan Grimes has signed for the club.

The 21 year old joins De Town from Sheriff YC having joined them last year after leaving Shelbourne in August 2018.

The midfielder joined the Drumcondra based club in 2014, signing for their 19’s side and made his first team competitive debut in 2015 under Kevin Doherty.

Speaking to LTFC.ie, Grimes explained how it was Manager Neale Fenn’s style of play that convinced him to join the red and black and that promotion is the end goal for himself and the team this year.

“One of the reasons I decided to sign for Longford is that Neale imposes on the team a style of play I enjoy – the right way to play football…the club has a great chance of winning the league so I hope to help in any way I can..to go and win it and gain automatic promotion, that’s the main goal for me…”

Dylan is available for selection for Friday night’s big game away to Limerick FC at Markets Field. Kick off is at 7:45PM.

Match Photos: Longford Town 1-0 Wexford FC

Saturday Night Fever at the City Calling Stadium as Longford Town squeeze past Wexford with a late, late goal by Jamie Doyle.

It was a late, late show at the City Calling Stadium tonight as Jamie Doyle’s vital goal netted all 3 priceless points – and if you wondered just how important that goal was….check out the pics from the scoring of the goal to the unbridled celebrations afterwards.

The attendances have increased this season – it’s great to see our older supporters still enjoying the fare but it’s even more encouraging seeing so many younger fans turning up regularly to experience the real live atmosphere of the City Calling Stadium.

The talented future stars of Longford and District Schoolgirls added greatly to tonight’s enjoyment at the City Calling Stadium. Apart from showcasing their undisputed footballing skills at half time, they also provided a guard of honour for both sets of players after the game – which made some of the players feel like rock stars. The girls are a very polite, friendly bunch of well disciplined and skillful footballers and they’ve a super future – a credit to their management and parents.

Dean Byrne received his May Player of the Month trophy from Ciara McGuinness, aided by Shane Connolly. Shane, a son of the famed Pauric Connolly is also manager of Cherry Orchard FC, brought along his footie mad daughter for her second game this week at the City Calling Stadium to see De Town win again!! The night was also proved to be a bit of a reunion for Shane and our fabulous net minder Lee Steacy – Shane maintains he spotted Lee’s talent years ago and signed him up when only a young fella.

And that about concludes the pictorial record for an other memorable Saturday night game at the City Calling Stadium.

RTE’s Late Late season may be over….but ours certainly isn’t !!

Thanks to everyone for coming out tonight to support De Town – it’s hugely appreciated- thanks too to the lads….but please…don’t leave it as late again, it’s not good for the auld hearts… C’mon De Town!!
