Wexford FC v Longford Town FC
SSE Airtricity League First Division
Friday 5th April 2019
Ferrycarrig Park | Kick-off 7.45pm

Longford Town make the long trip down to Wexford on Friday night, just three days after travelling to Derry City and bowing out of the EA Sports Cup, and just six days after a fantastic 2-0 win at home to Shelbourne in the league.

De Town go into the game unbeaten in the league and having only conceded one goal so far. Wexford haven’t had the best of starts to the league campaign but have shown great improvement in recent weeks narrowly losing out to Drogheda United through an injury time winner last week and then defeating Bray 2-0 the week before.

Neale Fenn’s side should be confident ahead of the encounter in the sunny south east with the Red and Black emerging victorious in 6 out 7 past league games between the two sides.

There are no injury concerns for Longford and Carlton Ubaezuonu has resumed training with the team after his injury and should be match fit within a number of weeks.

Wexford have the services of Danny Furlong to rely on this season and will no doubt be looking to their talisman to get them up and running. Chris Kenny is out injured for Brian O’Sullivan’s side and Sean Callan is out through suspension.

Neale Fenn spoke to LTFC.ie this week ahead of the game. “We’ve always found it difficult to go down there, the couple of times I’ve been down there, it’s been a dry pitch, and it’s been very slow, you know, we know what we’ve got to do. Wexford have been on a decent run the last couple of games and even though they lost to Drogheda, it was in the last minute, so they’ve improved but you know, we’re not scared, we’re gonna go down there full of confidence.”

Kick off at Ferrcarrig Park is at 7.45pm on Friday.

C’mon De Town!

MATCH REPORT | Longford Town 2-0 Shelbourne

Sat Mar 30th 2019

Town up to second after victory over Shels

Match Report by Tony Ghee

Goals from Peter Hopkins and Karl Chambers helped Longford Town to a two-nil victory over title favourites Shelbourne at the City Calling Stadium, a result that moves the ‘Red & Black’ up to second in the table just one point behind leaders Bray.

The Town took the lead on nineteen minutes after a dreadful mistake by Shelbourne keeper Delany. The visiting goalie’s throw was intercepted by Town winger Peter Hopkins, he waltzed past the challenge of central defender Luke Byrne, and drilled a low shot into the bottom right corner of the Shel’s net from the edge of the box.

It was almost two-nil to the home side just sixty seconds later, only for Delany to superbly tip-over Dean Zambra’s twenty-five yard thunderbolt.

Nine minutes into the second-half, a superb pass from the right from Shane Elworthy picked out Dobbs just inside the Shel’s box but his angled shot was well saved by Delany.

Shelbourne almost levelled the contest on fifty-eight minutes when Ryan Brennan’s downward header from a Lorcan Fitzgerald corner was headed off the line by Town winger Hopkins.

The visitors put the Town under severe pressure for the rest of the second-half but failed to test home keeper Steacy and deep into injury time, substitute Chambers sealed the three points with a fine strike that went in off the post.

TEAM LINE-UPS

Longford Town: Steacy, Elworthy, Kenna, McDonnell, Breslin, Zambra, Hopkins, Dervin, Verdon, Byrne, Dobbs.
