FIRST DIVISION PLAY-OFF MATCH PREVIEW: Longford Town v Cabinteely

Thu Oct 10th 2019

Match Preview by Tony Ghee

This Friday night at the City Calling Stadium, the second leg of the Promotion Play-Off between Longford Town and Cabinteely takes place with the game getting underway at 7.45pm.

This tie is delicately poised after last Friday’s goalless stalemate at Stradbrook in which both sides created good chances to win the contest. However, a combination of good goalkeeping, missed one-on-one opportunities, a disallowed Cabinteely goal, and a Longford Town effort that may or may not have crossed the line, all resulted in a clean sheet for both sides.

Longford Town almost took the lead after seven minutes when a Dylan Grimes corner was cleared off the Cabinteely line, an incident that sparked a debate as to whether the Town should have been awarded a goal.

Aaron Dobbs for Longford and Keith Dalton for Cabinteely both missed one-on-one chances with keepers McGuinness and Steacy coming out on top, while Paul Fox had a Cabinteely goal ruled out for offside.

Cabinteely had to play out the closing stages with ten players after former Longford defender, Kevin Knight, was dismissed for a poorly timed challenge on Town Centre-half, Mick McDonnell.

Both sides will be confident of success with Longford possibly having a very slight edge backed by an expectant big home following, however, Cabinteely have won two and drawn two of this season’s four meetings between the sides, including a one-nil victory at the City Calling Stadium back in May.

The potent threat of Kieran Marty Waters and the Division’s top scorer, Joe Manley, will give the visitors belief of scoring goals on the night and both will require close marshalling by the home defence.

On the plus side for Longford Town is the fact that they secured last week’s draw without the suspended Shane Elworthy and the ill Dean Byrne, while Aodh Dervin, Peter Hopkins, and Karl Chambers were all deemed unfit to start and had to settle for places on the bench. All of these players are now available to start the second leg with the only player out being the suspended left-back, Anto Breslin.

Action from last week’s scoreless draw v Cabinteely in the first leg of the playoff.

The winner of the match will have first leg home advantage against Drogheda United in the next round of the play-offs beginning Friday, October 18th.

FIRST DIVISION PLAYOFFS FIRST LEG: Cabinteely 0-0 Longford Town

Match report by Andrew Dempsey (Full match report on extratime.ie)

Ten-man Cabinteely held firm against Longford Town in the first-leg of their First Division Playoff with a scoreless draw.

Kevin Knight was dismissed late on with a poor challenge on Michael McDonnell – as both sides will feel as if they have a real chance ahead of next week’s second leg in the Midlands.

In the playoffs for the first time in their brief League of Ireland history – Cabinteely made eight changes from their most recent league win over Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park, with Rob Manley returning to the starting XI for the Green and Whites.

Longford on the other hand, who were in the First Division Playoffs for the first time since 2013 made three alterations themselves from their win away to Cobh Ramblers – as Sam Verdon made his return to the fold after missing out on the win over the Rams.

Despite having a raft of key players out missing, the visitors started very well, with Adam Evans and Jack Doherty causing all sorts of issues for the hosts back four.

Dylan Grimes’ corner-kick was then just about turned away from goal, with confusion reigning supreme as certain sections of the ground believed the ball hit the back of the net, but referee Alan Carey was unmoved.

Grimes and Aaron Dobbs soon saw shots just go wide – before the hosts fashioned an opening of their own, with nobody able to turn home Kieran ‘Marty’ Waters cross into the box.

Longford Town captain Dean Zambra saw his cross from the left-flank met by a header from Sam Verdon, but he could only direct the ball at the Cabinteely shot-stopper.

Arguably the chance of the half came hallway through the opening period. Dobbs was fed in by a lovely through ball by Evans, but he could only shoot straight at Stephen McGuinness with a weak enough effort.

After a slow start, Cabinteely began to fight back as the half wore on, with Keith Dalton breaking the visitor’s line for the first time – forcing Lee Steacy into a fine save with his feet as Daire Doyle’s side hung on.

Cabo continued to press, but they were unable to turn their territory into chances, with both teams going in at the break scoreless – an outcome that both would have taken at the start of the game

In a second half that took its time in coming to life, Longford fashioned the first chance of the half, with Dobbs going close – but the former Drogheda netminder was on hand to avert the danger.

However, Cabo rallied and should have really tested Steacy in the Longford goal, but they were unable to score via the head of sub Yuta Sasaki – who could not get on the end of ‘Marty’ Waters’ inch-perfect cross.

Winger Paul Fox then saw a goal ruled out for offside – as he turned home a brilliant ball from the right by Eoin Massey as the assistant waved his flag despite looking onside.

The remaining quarter of the game was a naturally tense affair, with neither side willing to push forward in fear of conceding on the counter-attack.

Former Longford Town full-back Kevin Knight was then dismissed with just under five minutes of normal time to play – with a poor tackle on McDonnell going punished by referee Carey.

However, both teams will be pleased with the result, with the second leg well and truly set up for a dramatic showdown at City Calling Stadium next week.

Match Report: Cabinteely FC 2-0 Longford Town FC

Match Report by James Donnelly

Longford Town missed out on all three points last night thanks to a Robert Manley brace that sealed the victory for Cabinteely in a tightly contested affair in Stradbrook.

De Town started the game brightly with Aaron Dobbs having the first major chance of the game after just 6 minutes. A long ball over the top was brought down by Sam Verdon who did well to play it into Dobbs in the box but his half-volley was straight at Stephen McGuinness in the Cabo goal who palmed it away to safety.

The home side pressured Longford and had a chance of their own on 24 minutes when a high ball was flashed across the box but Paul Fox’s connected header was high and over, much to the relief of Lee Steacy in goal.

Longford could have opened the scoring only minutes later when Conor Kenna snuck in un-marked at the back post and headed towards goal but it was easily gathered by McGuinness.

Cabinteely eventually got their goal after a period of sustained pressure on the Longford backline. Rob Manley got in between the defence and had his initial shot saved well by Lee Steacy but he recovered to slot it home from a tight angle to put Pat Devlin’s side in the driving seat after 36 minutes.

Town could have been on level terms just before half time when Karl Chambers played in Aaron Dobbs in the box but the Wexford’s man shot was blocked when it seemed destined for the goal.

The second half saw a number of changes for Longford with Aaron Dobbs and Karl Chambers being replaced by Dean Byrne and De Town’s newest signing, Sean Boyd. (On loan from Shamrock Rovers)

Sam Verdon had a chance on 58 minutes when he did well down the right side, getting into the box before shooting on goal, but again, it was straight at McGuinness.

Verdon almost got an assist in the hour mark when he played in Sean Boyd. A brilliant move started by Aodh Dervin in midfield resulted in a expertly placed through ball releasing Verdon on the right before he squared it for Boyd in the box but the Rovers loanee hit the post from close range before it bounced off McGuinness’ back and was eventually cleared.

Cabo could have been two up when a ball over the top caught Mick McDonnell out and bounced over his head for Rob Manley to race onto but Town keeper Lee Steacy was quick off his line to smother the ball to safety.

Eight minutes from time, Verdon had a chance to level again but his header from an Anto Breslin corner was saved by McGuinness.

With 5 mins remaining, Longford threw everybody forward but it was the home side who would get the second goal of the game deep into injury time. Some sloppy play in defence led to Cabo sub Sasaki saw him play in Manley who did well to work it past Steacy to seal the win for the south Dublin side.

A disappointing result for De Town who are now in 3rd place in the league and face Galway United at the City Calling Stadium next Saturday night in a must win game in the promotion race.
