Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup First Round

Longford Town v Sligo Rovers

Saturday 12th August 2017

City Calling Stadium

Kick off: 7:30pm

A big crowd is expected for tonights Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup first round clash between Longford Town FC and Sligo Rovers FC at the City Calling Stadium.

Longford Town come into tonights cup game off the back of a 2-0 loss at at the hands of Cobh Ramblers in the league last week. We are currently 6th, just two points behind Shels. Sligo are currently 2nd from bottom in the premier division on 24 points, just one point behind Galway.

In what has been a mixed season so far for both clubs, Longford and Sligo, both with a history of success in this cup, will be looking to progress and make a point tonight. Sligo have won the FAI Cup 3 times in the last 7 years. where as Longford’s last cup final win was way back in 2004 retaining it after winning it in 2003.

Neale Fenn will be looking to start a successful cup run tonight and has said that the “boys have looked very good in training this week”. He will be boosted by the return to fitness of talisman David O’Sullivan who has missed most of the season through a lengthy injury. That, along with the possible inclusion of our new signings. Kevin O’Connor is a doubt after picking up an injury during the warm up of our last home game v Shelbourne.

Sligo Rovers’ Tobi Adebayo-Rowling is suspended for the game.

In what is expected to be City Calling Stadiums largest attendance of the season, kick off tonight is at 7:30PM.

MATCH PREVIEW: El Clasico – Athlone Town v Longford Town

Wed Jun 21st 2017

SSE Airtricity League First Division

Athlone Town v Longford Town
Athlone Town Stadium
Friday 23rd June 2017 – Kick-off: 7:45pm

Longford Town travel to neighbours and arch enemy Athlone Town on Friday night for the 3rd “El Clasico” of this years league and 4th in all competitions.

The first midlands derby took place on March 10th, earlier this year. A hat-trick from super striker David O’Sullivan was enough to see off any potential threat from Athlone who had opened their league campaign with a decent win over Waterford, followed by a win over Wexford. The second game was the first round of the EA Sports Cup which saw a 7 goal thriller played out in front of a small Athlone crowd. Davy O’Sullivan once again showing why he’s Longfords record goal scorer, providing anoter hat-trick. Rescuing Longford after going 2-0 down to Athlone in the first half, O’Sullivan equalized after Athlone got their 3rd in the 69th minute and Cody Mulhall got the winner in a 4-3 victory for Longford. The third meeting between the two clubs ended 3-1 to Longord. Davy O’Sullivan went off injured early in the first half so hopes of a hat-trick of hat-tricks were forgotten about. Enda Curran who replaced O’Sullivan had other ideas. 2 goals in the first half and a 3rd in the 90th minute saw the Galway man get his first hat-trick for Longford. Final score of that game at City Calling Stadium was 3-1 Longford.

Things will be a little different for both clubs when they meet on Friday night. Both clubs have said goodbye to their previous managers, Athlone parting ways with Ricardo Monsanto and Longford parting ways with Alan Mathews. Roddy Collins is back at the helm at Athlone while Longford are currently searching for a new man to lead the club. Gary Cronin is caretaker boss and oversaw a great 2-1 over Cobh last week. Jake Kelly scored the winner in injury time from a free kick. No doubt, that would have been a great confidence booster going into Fridays game. Longford will be without talisman David O’Sullivan as he is still working his way back from injury as is Mark Langtry. Enda Curran and Don Cowan both featured last week and will be hoping to see more action on Friday. Cody Mulhall is also back in the squad after injury and centre back Daniel O’Reilly returns from suspension.

Athlone Town come into Fridays game not having won a game since the 5th May. A 6-1 hammering at home v Waterford before the break was followed by a 2-2 draw v Wexford  away last week. With Roddy still seeking his first win back in charge, Longford can take nothing for granted, especially in “El Clasico” where anything can happen.

Team News:

Longford Town: Daniel O’Reilly returns from suspension. Injured: David O’Sullivan, Mark Langtry.

Athlone Town: Not Available.

MATCH REPORT: Longford Town 2-1 Cobh Ramblers

Sun Jun 18th 2017

LONGFORD TOWN 2-1 COBH RAMBLERS
City Calling Stadium
Saturday 17th June 2017
Kick-off: 7:30pm

Longford Town got their second half of the season off to a cracking start last Saturday, defeating Cobh Ramblers 2-1 on a beautifully sunny evening at City Calling Stadium.

Longford had the first chance of the game when Cobh’s Ben O’Riordan played a pass back to former Town keeper Paul Hunt who failed to control it, Dylan McGlade took possession and attempted to round Hunt in the box before getting his shot off but Hunt got down well to make the save and put it out for a corner. Jake Kelly swung the ball out to Kevin O’Connor on the edge of the box but his shot was mishit, it fell to Noel Haverty in the box but he failed to connect. Noel hadn’t started a game since the opening game of the season where he picked up a bad injury v Shels at Tolka. A few moments later, Kealan Dillon picked up the ball in midfield, rounded his man and played through a precision pass to Jake Kelly who flicked it by Hunt, who came rushing out, but it was too far ahead and went out wide.

Cobh had their first chance of the game when Dean Zambra foulded McCarthy about 25 yards out. The resulting free was hit over. Karl Chambers was lively, him and Kealan Dillon were finding gaps in the Cobh team and were putting some nice 1-2 passes together. Town had another chance in the 36th minute when full back Aidan Friel shot from 30 yards, the ball narrowly missing Hunts right hand post. Cobh replied by breaking down the left with McNamara, his cross was met by Christopher but his shot was deflected out for a corner. Longford finally broke the deadlock on 46 minutes when Karl Chambers opened the scoring. Kealan Dillon laid it off to Dylan McGlade on the left wing, McGlade cut inside on to his right and put in a wonderfully weighted cross which Chambers made no mistake in heading into the top corner leaving Hunt hopeless.

Longford had the better of starts for the second half. Dylan McGlade trying an audacious attempt from 40 yards almost lobbing Hunt. Kealan Dillon and Kevin O’Connor were opening the game up from midfield and Dillon was also trying from long range. Cobh didn’t back down however and kept pushing for an equalizer. Jason Abbott found himself on the end of a cross but his header back across the box failed to meet a Cobh man. Noel Haverty then came to the rescue for Longford in the 73rd minute intercepting a pass that, had it have been met in the box, most likely would have ended up in the back of the Town net. Cobh finally got their equalizer in the 85th minute. McSweeney broke down the right wing and cut inside, calls for a goal kick were ignored and his cross was put in off the crossbar. Noack-Hofmann and Walsh were incensed but the ref said the goal stood.

Longford didn’t give up, neither did Cobh. Both teams pushed on for a winner in the closing minutes. Cobh were attacking when Stephen Walsh put in a ferocious tackle, winning back possession, he played it off to Dylan McGlade who broke down the stand side who won a free. The free was cleared but it fell to Don Cowan who won a free on the right hand side about 30 yards out. Up stepped Jake Kelly. His free was hit in with pace into the box, no player latched onto it and it bounced straight into the net! A last minute winner and 3 vital points for Longford Town. The club are now 1 point behind 4th place Cabinteely. We play Athlone next Friday 23rd June in Athlone.

MATCH PREVIEW

Longford Town FC v Cobh Ramblers FC

City Calling Stadium

Saturday 17th June 2017. KO: 7:30PM

Longford Town host Cobh Ramblers tonight, fresh off a 2 week break which started after a 0-0 draw against 9 man Shelbourne. Ramblers defeated Wexford 1-0 just before the holidays and are currently sitting in 2nd in the table just behind leaders Waterford.

Cobh defeated Longford Town on both occasions so far this season, winning 3-1 at City Calling Stadium in March followed by a 2-0 win at home in April so caretaker Boss Gary Cronin and the team will be out for revenge.

A win over Cobh tonight would see Longford leapfrog Shels into 5th place on 20 points, just 1 point behind 4th place Cabinteely FC and hopefully kickstart a more successful second half of the season for the club.

Cobh Team News: Due to college and work commitments, Ross Mann left the club.

Longford Team News: Daniel O’Reilly is suspended. Davy O’Sullivan and Mark Langtry remain on the injury list. Enda Curran, Cody Mulhall and Don Cowan are all hopeful to feature.
