TOWNS DRAW

There was a good Longford travelling support in Athlone last Friday evening but the resultant 1-1 draw was far from good. Just like our first game against the other Town, we went one behind and had to battle back to get a share of the spoils. Chris Mulhall had a bittersweet night. First he netted the all important equaliser but near the end of the game, he was dismissed by the ref in what appeared to be a very harsh decision. We had travelled expecting all three points; one point was a very disappointing outcome.

GALWAY AT HOME ON FRIDAY

We face Galway this Friday night, June 1st with a 7.45pm kick off time. Yes, you read that correctly, it’s Friday night and not Saturday night. Why? Because we play Finn Harps up in Finn Park on the Monday. It’s the re-scheduled game from a while past when we had rather different weather to this recent balmy spell. Galway are currently 4 points ahead of us, sitting in 3rd position. Drogheda beat them in Galway last week so they’ll be feeling sore and looking for a full haul of points. But then, surely we’ve a point or three to prove too. It’ll be a tough one. See you there on Friday night….Friday remember.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH /MAY

Congratulations to Sam Verdon who is our Player of the Month for May. He’ll receive his trophy before Friday night’s game .

CAR BOOT SALE

The June Bank Holiday Monday has come round very fast. Anyway, as well as the game up in Finn Park, we also have our car boot sale at the City Calling Stadium. It starts when the sun rises and finishes at 3pm. The last one was an incredible success with probably our largest crowd since we started the car boot sales. So, if interested, be on time. And if you’re considering helping out because we always need volunteers, let Liam Healion know this Friday.

HAPPY TONY

While in the midst of London town last Sunday, Tony Ghee received the news that the County team had beaten Meath. It was a welcome gee up for Tony who has to miss a few Town games due to work commitments in the UK. But fair play to Tony, he had already filed his brilliant match reports before jetting off. See you home soon again, Tony.

POINT MADE

In the lead up to this clash against Shelbourne many were saying that we had to win it. With only a point dividing the teams, we knew it was going to be yet another tough one. However, on a dry and windy night in front of a decent crowd, it was the visitors who were in complete control for most of the opening half. The wind seemed to be playing a role with many of our clearances going straight over the stand side line. They had a decent sized travelling support who were just waiting for their opening score. Luckily we held out till the second period but, truth be told, we went in lucky to be on level terms.

Whatever was added to the tea during the break had the desired effect. We played with greater passion and commitment and though a slighter side, no one was found wanting. Those three precious points seemed to have evaporated when a once favourite former Town player rose unchallenged to head Shels in front. The corner that led to their opening goal resulted from two of our own errors and you just hoped that heads wouldn’t drop. Thankfully the opposite happened and the search for an invaluable equaliser became frantic. Dylan McGlade was tormenting the visitors with his silken skillsand at the same time encouraging louder support from the home support. Eventually after a super run, he unleashed a cracker to the left of the despairing Shels’ keeper, who until then had denied us time after time.

There were chances by both teams to grab all three points but the crossbar denied the visitors while Sam Verdon headed wide in front of an open goal. We were hoping for maximum points before the game but most were happy with a share of the spoils and the renewed fighting spirit shown in the second period.

ATHLONE AWAY

There’s sure to be a large Longford Town travelling support. heading down to Athlone this Friday. The game kicks of at 7.45pm on Friday May 25th in Athlone Town Stadium. Our away form of late has been impressive but there can no slip-up on Friday if we’re to maintain any interest in escaping from the lower division. Football can be a funny old sport but the last thing we want is for other teams to be laughing at us if we don’t produce the goods against our near neighbours. It’s only down the road so hopefully we’ll see and hear a good Longford support support the red and black brigade.

AODH’S AWARD

Aodh Dervin was presented with his Supporters’ Club trophy for being Player of the Month for April before last Saturday’s game. Not only has the young lad broken into the first team, he now has become a regular starter. For us golden oldies who remember Aodh as a youngster continuously honing his skills, seeing his rapid improvement being recognised as April’s Player of the Month was particularly satisfying. We wish Aodh all the best in his Leaving Cert next month and maybe it was ironic that a retired teacher from his school, Tom McGuinness who made the presentation.

DE VAN

Roddy Doyle made a bit of a stir when he wrote his novel The Van. However on a local sporting note, it’s Andy Dardis who is certainly who is creating one almighty stir with his fabulously painted van, DeVan. For those who have yet to see the creation, Andy’s van has had a giant club crest added to his already red van and all agree that it’s simply magnificent. It was certainly turning heads on a sun drenched day at the photo shoot outside Esquires last week. One elderly lady from outside the county was heard to remark that the owner must be very religious “driving round with a painting of the cathedral on its side”. In actual fact, it’s hoped that Andy will have whatever is the upcoming game adorning its side panels. As a piece of marketing, it’s simply superb. Happy motoring Andy in De Van.

FLOWER POWER

Red and black supporter Bobby Stocks certainly has green fingers. We’re constantly being complimented for our facilities in the City Calling Stadium and this May, we’re rightly proud of yet another colourful addition. Right round the concourse, Bobby has provided an array of multi coloured hanging baskets which are a joy to behold and certainly not something you’d see in too many stadia. Thanks Bobby, they’re truly a sight for sore sporting eyes.

SPREADING THE WORD

It was a busy week for the local youth organisation The Attic last week. On Saturday night they hosted Hype which saw teens for all over the land arrive in town for a music fest. But earlier in the week, they hosted our management team of Neale Fenn, Daire Doyle and Ger Mooney. The three very wise men were guests of Longford Comhairle na nOg which was an outstanding success. Fair play, once again, to out over-worked chairperson Avril Gilchrist for organising it all.

GET WELL WISHES

The Supporters’ Club would like to send get well wishes to Mel Devlin who is currently recovering in hospital following an operation. Mel, and indeed his entire family have been huge and loyal supporters of Longford Town for decades. Mel, we look forward to seeing back in the City Calling Stadium in the not too distant future. In the meantime, look after yourself – we miss you, we’re all thinking of you and wishing you well.

SUCCESS ON THE ROAD

The 2-0 success away to Wexford at the week end rounded off a pretty successful period of travelling the highways and byways of Ireland. The EA SPORTS Cup loss to Cobh was merely a speed bump on a series of long trips. It was league points that we really needed and we couldn’t have done better than six out of six. Jamie Hollywood and Chris Mulhall‘s haul down in Wexford were vital so that we could keep in touch with the teams ahead of us in what is turning out to be a real case of Close Encounters.

SHELS AT HOME

The visit of Shelbourne this Saturday night is a huge game for us. Every Town supporter at the first game of the season between the two clubs, firmly believed we should have had all three precious points, being the better side. A certain former Town player is keeping them ticking over this season with his growing goal tally. His appearance back in the City Calling Stadium will be interesting – to put it mildly. As things stand, we’re a single point behind the Tolka Park outfit. Sitting in 6th place isn’t what anyone expected before the season kicked off, so Saturday night will be the perfect time to kick start our season with a much needed home win. It’s going to be another tense affair. But if we can eliminate giving away silly goals and increase our already growing home support base, then a leap frog could be on the cards. We need to see you there on Saturday night.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

The award for Player of the Month for April will be presented before the game on Saturday night. Aodh Dervin, who is currently injured will be the recipient with Phil Pike, of the Supporters’ Club making the presentation. The presentation is made as the players come off the pitch following their warm up.

HUGE THANKS

The May Bank Holiday Car Boot Sale was simply massive. There were so many people wanting space for stands that we had to turn away plenty of stall holders. Incredibly, by 8.30am the traffic was parked right back to the Westside Cafe. Seasoned car boot attendees maintained that it was the largest crowd ever – and that’s saying something.

A huge thank you to all who supported the event but most especially the group of volunteers who were on duty for long hours on what’s free time for most. Our next one is the June Bank Holiday Monday and remember, the show kicks off at 4am and not 10am.

THAT SONG

Singer/song writer supreme Ultan Conlon was passing the City Calling Stadium on Sunday and simply had to stop to take a photo. Straight away it was gaining likes and comments on his social media platforms including some from here. And why, what’s the connection? The Measure of You is his latest chart topping hit single and includes Longford Town in the lyrics. If you haven’t already done so, just Google or YouTube him. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

MEDIA MATTERS

The standard of communication on social media has soared so far this season. No sooner had we gone ahead against Wexford than the goal was posted as a video on the website. Minutes later it was followed by some excellent still photos from a local Wexford photographer. The days and nights of depending on our national broadcasting service have truly passed. But Padraig Stapleton, James Donnelly and Kieran Burke have played a blinder since being sprung from the social media bench.

WINNING WEEK

The flowers of May blossomed early for all Town supporters with two fine away wins within the first week. On May 1st we headed up to UCD in a Leinster Senior Cup Fourth Round clash. Most agreed that UCD had provided our stiffest challenge in the first round of the league and despite changes on both sides, an other tough game was envisaged. De Town’s small but vocal travelling support were silenced when the hosts went one up . However, we were giving as good as we got and in the second half, all changed when man of the match Jackson Ryan netted twice to give us a well deserved win on the road and restore some confidence at the same time. UCD did manage to smash the ball off the crossbar in the dying moments but an other late, late goal conceded would have been too much. The sound of relief was as loud as the almighty thump of the crossbar. We can look forward to beating Shelbourne in the quarter finals.

Then it was a long haul drive down south to Cobh on Saturday night May 5th. A surprising large crowd of the usual loyal Town supporters made the trip and were made feel welcome at St Colman’s Park. Despite various problems in the Cork harbour set up, they certainly made us work hard for our three points. Sam Vernon’s coolly taken strike was enough to earn us the victory and his little dance routine was straight out of Strictly Come Dancing. By car, it meant leaving Longford at 2pm and returning at 2.30am. Yet, some of those incredible supporters intend making the exact same trip this Tuesday for the EA Sports Cup clash back at the same venue, same opposition. If the result is the same, then the miles won’t feel as long. It’s a bit of a pity that some of those who booked the Section O bus failed to turn up. Unfortunately, it’s not a new problem.

WEXFORD AWAY

This Friday night, we’re back on the road again. After two trips to Cork, now it’ll be Wexford. While they may be a few points behind us, we know it’s going to be an other tough encounter if we’re to maintain our winning away streak. But with all the other title contenders winning last weekend, it’s vital that we don’t slip up down in the sometimes, sunny south east. Despite our hard earned three points in Cobh, we still remain 2 points behind Finn Harps on Saturday night. It’s far from half time in the league yet but each game is vital in this ultra competitive season. Fingers crossed.

INSTANT CELEBRATIONS

The times, they have a changed already. There was a large group of Town supporters attending a wedding in Poland while the game was being played in Cobh. But thanks to our media manager James Donnelly’s instant updates being flashed around the world on social media, word reached the anxious wedding group in a twinkling of the smart phone. As the party goers danced around an outdoor fire and sang Stand Up If You’re Longford Town (well, the same line non stop), their song and dance routine was also flashed round the world. It was uploaded onto our own social media platforms for all to enjoy.

Here’s the video!

SUNNY CAR BOOT SALE

It’s not every Bank Holiday that’s promised as sunny as this May Monday but hopefully the spell of good weather waved a magic wand over our car boot sale too. These lines are written before the car boot sale kick off but hopefully all goes well.

50/50 RESULT

Heartiest congratulations to Kitty Conway, c/o Andy Dardis who was last week’s winner of the €200 on offer. If you’re not in, you can’t win and although the prize fund is slightly smaller than the lottery, your chances of winning are far greater. And you’ll be supporting sport, locally.
