SHAMROCK ROVERS AT HOME

This Friday night sees us take on Shamrock Rovers in the last game of the league and our final one in the top flight for at least one more season. Despite drawing away to Galway, we prop up the league and now face all sorts of battles ahead of us. A few seasons ago when were also at the wrong end, Section O had a song “The Eircom League is upside down” and then we were able to laugh at it. Times have changed.

It’s been a poor season on many fronts and that’s an understatement. We’ve heard all the excuses before, many times. And there’s little to be had from rehashing them all here now.
It’s simple to talk the talk but not too many walk the walk. The last time we dropped to the lower division, it took us seven long seasons to get back up again. If that happens again, most of the Supporters Club and a lot of the committee will be getting the free travel pass. New recruits urgently needed.

WORTHY CHAMPIONS

Dundalk are champions again and for the 3rd year in a row. Not bad for a club that was on its knees just five seasons ago. They’re simply the best team with the best manager that Ireland has produced in living memory. And yet when they played us last week, only a handful of locals bothered to come out and see them. A dull, boring game in England was on the telly and seemingly that was a better way to spend an evening.

CAR BOOT SALE

And finally, our final Car Boot Sale of the year takes place this bank holiday Monday with a very early kick off. If you’re wondering what is meant by early, well for the last event, some arrived on the Sunday night. It lasts all day with the final whistle sounding at 3pm. These car boot sales are hugely important for the club’s finances and your support would be greatly appreciated. As per usual, we’re looking for volunteers both during and after the event. Already, some of the old reliables are saying they’re unable to be present for the clean up after 3pm so if you could spare a few minutes, it could make a huge difference.

STATUS QUO

Nothing changed for us after last Friday night’s defeat to Bohs. Sadly it’s just a case of the status quo being maintained. The damage was done just after the half hour mark and that single goal remained the difference until the final whistle. Meanwhile, Wexford were also beaten so the gap remains the same too. Even a point would have been a huge morale booster but it wasn’t to be. But we must believe that there will be a few twists and turns before the final game. It still is possible to overtake Wexford, of course that would be a minor miracle but let’s keep the faith.

FREE WEEKEND

Our game this weekend against Dundalk has been on the long finger because of their Cup game. At the time of writing, there’s no date for the re fixture yet. Between all games at home and in Europe, Dundalk will have some back log of fixtures. Surely they can’t keep on performing at such a high level and wouldn’t it be just great if we could nick three points off them. Stranger things have happened; after all who else but ourselves scored three against them up in Oriel Park this season.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH / SEPTEMBER

Congratulations to towering Yann Mvita who was won the September Player of the Month award. Some were saying he should have won the previous month’s award but he was only beaten by a narrow whisker then. So this is Yann’s month and is well deserved. We may still be at the wrong end of the table but Yann has shown great skill, strength and resolve in a difficult, pressurised position since joining us. The presentation will be made at our next home game. At this stage, that appears to be Saturday, October 8th v Derry City. That of course could change. Well done Yann.

DOUBLE CONGRATS

Congratulations and best wishes to long time Supporters’ Club member, Ryan Connolly on his recent graduation. And as of that wasn’t enough, Ryan also celebrated his 21st recently. Although based in Dublin, Ryan seldom misses a game no matter where in the country it is. Hopefully we’ll put a few points on the board before the end of the season as a fitting birthday present, Ryan. Congrats from us all.

ROAD SIGN DEBACLE

The few readers of these notes will know well that ours were the first road signs to be confiscated by the council. Despite meetings with the removal company, there was to be no compromise. The LTFC signs were taken and wouldn’t be making a comeback any day soon. Then Mayo reach the All Ireland final and before you could say C’mon Mayo, the place is covered with signs. The removal company went to work on these signs also but that was far from being the end of the sorry saga. Our elected representatives took to social media and the airwaves and eventually the story was front page news on the Longford Leader. Amazingly the council changed their minds. But they changed their minds because of Mayo not us long suffering locals. Longford sporting clubs and local charities are banned but Mayo GAA is grand. The mind boggles.

LONGFORD LADIES

Huge congrats to the Longford Ladies on their magnificent All Ireland victory against Antrim on Sunday last. It’s one thing to win the title but the manner in which they stormed back from being behind was inspirational. Well done girls.

PRECIOUS POINTS

Three precious points were gained in a pulsating game up in Finn Park last Friday night. Both teams had poor results behind them and both were desperately hungry for the points on offer. Local media in Donegal were reporting that the game against us was their only realistic hope of three points in a series of three games. Thankfully Kevin O’Connor’s early strike silenced the locals and secured those precious points. But it wasn’t that simple, it never is. Both sides had plenty of chances and there were enough heart stopping moments to merit near heart attacks. When, after some confusion, the hosts were awarded a penalty with just ten minutes remaining, hearts momentarily stopped. But in fairness to Ryan Coulter, he kept his nerve and kept an invaluable clean sheet with his save. Finn Park and De Town are certainly building a store of penalty stories. This game had everything from near misses to off the line clearances but in the end, it was three priceless points and a sigh of relief which could be heard all the way back down to Longford. The struggle remains enormous but a little light at the end of a long dark tunnel is more than welcome. Fair play to Alan Mathews and the lads for the hard graft.

BOHS AWAY

We’re back on the road again this week end when Bohemians provide the opposition. Friday 23 at Dalymount with a 7.45 kick off is what’s on the menu. Bohs fell to an unexpected 2-0 defeat against Galway at the week end and so will be anxious to get back to winning ways. But De Town will surely make life difficult for them and now that we’ve managed a win, what better, than to add to it with an other. Now wouldn’t that be sweet. We may be out of the Cup but every single game now is a cup final.

DUNDALK GAME

Our home game against Dundalk which was to have been on Saturday, October 1st has now been put back due to Dundalk’s Cup game the following day. The Louth outfit certainly have a glut of games between domestic and European commitments but I’m sure they’re not complaining up there. Hopefully the re-arranged game can take place on a date which will suit a large crowd. We could do with some healthy gate receipts.

CONGRATULATIONS

Avril Gilchrist and Marty Stapleton both had birthdays recently but they’re far from being twins. They’re both fantastic Town supporters though and the both were overjoyed with their weekend presents from the team…three priceless points. Now, who could ask for anything more. Best wishes too to Supporters’ Club member, Michael Tighe whose incredibly bravery at the Siege of Jadotville in the Congo 55 years ago was finally recognised by the Government at a ceremony in Athlone last Saturday.

WELCOME HOME

Welcome home (complete with dark tans) to Mags and Liam who have returned from Spain and to Evelyn Shaw who jetted back from Italy. All three were delighted with Friday’s three points and three pints were had in honour of the occasion.

MATHEWS’ RETURN

Alan Mathews’ return to Longford Town didn’t produce the hoped for three points as we edge ever closer to the dreaded drop. Ciaran Mullooly, fresh from his trip to Barcelona’s Camp Nou was among the crowd but if he was expecting a sporting scoop, he, like the rest of us left disappointed. In fairness we did show some flair but when we gave away a sloppy goal before the break, the remainder of the game became more and more of a mountain to climb. Their second goal was a real killer punch. The 2-0 home defeat was bad enough but this was our first defeat to Bray in two years makes it feel even worse. The evenings are getting darker and so too are our prospects.

HARPS AWAY

This Friday night, we travel north to Finn Park to see if we can snatch a win. As always, it’s a difficult place to get anything and the hosts will be looking on the game as a certainty for three valuable points as they consolidate their status for next season. But miracles do happen and you’d just never know.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH / AUGUST

Congrats to Eddie Dsane who received his award after the game on Saturday night last. With the change of management, the players were brought into the dressing rooms earlier than expected so we were caught out. Eddie was clearly delighted with his award and wondered if he could keep it ! We may not be the richest supporters’ club in the land but we don’t recycle the monthly trophies…yet.

SUPPORTERS’ CLUB MEETING

This Monday night, September 12th at 7.30pm, the Supporters’ Club will be having a meeting in the Clubhouse. If you can be there, it’d be greatly appreciated.

BITS N BOBS

Fair play to Avril Gilchrist who organized a superb team of ball boys for the game against Bray…..they looked incredibly professional and well organized…..but we missed you at half time in the Clubhouse….even Superwoman can’t be in two places at once…….also sorely missed was Johnny Nevin who has taken up an old traditional hobby….letter writing……De Town will be well represented in sunnier climes this week….enjoy it Mags and Liam…….and yet another one, sorely missed from the sidelines was star snapper Frank McGrath who decided to shoot some horses for a change….and finally, best of luck to our younger supporters who receive their Junior Cert results this Wednesday.
