ANOTHER HUGE SUCCESS

Fair play to the volunteers at the recent car boot sale. Once again, it was a massive success and the club itself is extremely grateful for the support we can afford to pass on. Although we’re in mid May, plans are already well advanced for our June Bank Holiday car boot sale. Any extra volunteer help greatly appreciated.

AND ANOTHER POINT

We picked up one more point in the scoreless draw against Cabinteely on Saturday last at Stradbrook. What that means is we’re just ahead of Athlone on goal difference following their surprise win over Cobh. Taking positives, so far in this second quarter, we’re doing better than in the first quarter by three points, so surely that can’t be bad.

STUDENTS AT HOME

On Saturday night, May 13th we face the students of UCD with the usual kick off time of 7.30pm at the City Calling Stadium. It might be exam times for many college students but for us this will be a testing game. UCD are a mere point behind table toppers Waterford, while we’re a full 8 points behind them. A home win on Saturday night would really get us back in the mix but of course, it’s going to be a real tough battle. They come to the City Calling Stadium after beating bottom side Wexford 2-0 and will surely fancy their chances. They’ll bring their usual following of about 5 supporters so at least we won’t have to worry about extra security. A few extra points would do nicely though.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH PRESENTATION

The April winner of the Player of the Month award, Enda Curran will receive his trophy before the game against UCD on Saturday night. Desi Maguire is the Supporters’ Club member who was drawn to make the presentation. Well done to Enda who ended his goal drought in spectactular fashion last month, netting five times which included a hat trick against hapless Athlone. Every month a different paid up member of the Supporters’ Club is drawn to make the presentation. So, if you’ve joined up, the next presentation could be made by you.

UNWANTED ATTENTION

We often complain about the lack of national media coverage for the domestic league and in particular the lowly first division. Well, there certainly was a reversal of that trend of late with the two towns coming in for a lot of talk, chatter and no end of slagging. Although it had nothing to do with us, there was no shortage of slagging and ( mostly ) good natured banter. But, you know, it’s strange, if we go on to win the league, we wouldn’t get as much national coverage. And you can bet on that !

SNIPPETS

Heartiest congratulations to our U17s who had a magnificent Cup win against a Galway side who consider themselves almost unbeatable. Congrats too to Adrian Massop whose young girls side are making considerable progress. And finally, welcome home to Donald (there’s only one Donald) who has recently returned from some celebrations in the UK.

CAR BOOT SALE

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped out at the May Day Car Boot Sale. Sometimes, a mere thank you seems trivial and this is one of those times. When volunteers leave their cosy beds at 4.30am on a bank holiday morning to help support De Town , then that sort of volunteerism is simply beyond a simple “thank you”. If the Irish soccer team are supposed to have the best supporters in Europe, then surely De Town have the best volunteers. The revenue from the Bank Holiday car boot sales is vital for the running of the club and it goes without saying that the volunteers are therefore vital for the club. Well done one and all on your fabulous behind the scenes work.

MORE POINTS

Three valuable goals from Enda Curran meant three invaluable points as we again defeated Athlone Town. Not only did Enda’s hat-trick gain us three precious points but it also had us jump up to a more credible fifth place in the league and just one point behind Cabinteely. On Saturday, May 6th we play Cabinteely in Stradbrook with a 7.00pm kick off time. By all accounts, the playing surface leaves a lot to be desired but should we come away with three more points, we won’t be complaining as a win would see us leapfrog our hosts. With Cobh rambling to the top of the league at the weekend, suddenly the league becomes very interesting. May could be a fascinating month yet.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH / APRIL

Heartiest congratulations to Enda Curran who has been nominated April’s Player of the Month. With five goals bagged (and all at home) during a particularly fruitful month, he’s surely a deserving winner. We hadn’t seen a home win in the longest time, but Enda’s strikes put an end to that unwanted miserable statistic. Desi Maguire will be making the presentation to Enda Curran before the game against UCD on Saturday, May 13th.

If you haven’t already joined us in the Supporters’ Club, it’s still not too late. We have so many reasons for joining that you’ll have to visit to our FB page to read them all. CAR BOOT SALE

Our last car boot sale on Easter Monday was an outstanding success. A huge and sincere thank you to the small band of volunteers who make such a huge difference. This Monday, May 1st is another Bank Holiday and therefore another car boot sale at the City Calling Stadium car park. It kicks off very early in the morning before the final whistle sounds at 3pm. The June bank holiday car boot sale is obviously just a month away too. Once again, if you have some spare time Liam Healion would love to hear from you, give him a shout at this week-end’s game.

MATCHES A PLENTY

We’re certainly in the thick of things regarding matches these days and they’re coming quick and fast. Following two quick goals down in Cobh, we had to make the long return trip empty handed and now we find ourselves back down at second from bottom. However, this Saturday night we have a chance to leapfrog again if we beat Athlone for the third time this season. Kick off is 7.30pm at the City Calling Stadium. The usual Supporters’ Club photographer can’t be present but I’m sure you won’t miss him too much. Then on Tuesday May 2nd we travel to the Tallaght Stadium to play Shamrock Rovers in the quarter finals of the EA Sports Cup. Thankfully common sense prevailed and our Friday night game against high fliers Cabinteely has been rescheduled for Saturday May 6th with a 7.00pm kick off. No easy fixtures in the above list but hopefully we can continue our good form against Athlone and then shock the Hoops before leaving Stradbrook with all three points. No harm in being optimistic!

ADDED VALUE

Thanks to Avril Gilchrist, Sinead Keegan and Mary Sexton King we’ve some cracking value for anyone joining the Supporters’ Club. When you produce your Supporters’ Club membership card, you can avail of a 5% discount at Cullen’s Footware and a 10% discount if you spend €10 or more at Dennistons and 10% discount at all of the following:

  • QPP
  • MJ Earley’s Textiles
  • O’Connor Florists
  • Snooker at the Railway Bar
  • Eamonn Farrell Photography

As well as all of the above, you can get 10% discount off all club merchandise and be entered into a free draw to present the Player of the Month trophy. And all of this for a mere ten euro, sure where else would you get value like this. You’d be crazy not to join up; just ask for details in the Clubhouse this Saturday night.

CAR BOOT SALES

With two Monday bank holidays following each other in rapid succession, our hard working volunteers are flat out organising the 2 car boot sales. The first one is this Easter Monday bank holiday and the second one is on the May Bank Holiday Monday, May 1st. Both kick off very early in the morning and the final whistle goes at 3pm and as usual both are held in the spacious and well appointed car park at the CCS. Our car boot sale are well established at this stage with people travelling from as far away as Donegal to support them. Liam Healion too, would like some support and even if you have just one hour, he’d really appreciate it. These events are of huge benefit to the Club and your support is greatly appreciated.

EASTER RISING

When the list of those injured players appeared before the Shelbourne clash, many didn’t give us a chance. It looked as if our threat up front had all but disappeared in a list of injuries. When the visitors went up after a mere 3 minutes, it looked like we’d witness no resurrection this Easter. Thankfully the players had other ideas and really got stuck in with the crowd getting right behind them. Many were waiting for Enda Curran to turn on the style and those waiting disciples were well rewarded with 2 excellent goals. It was clearly obvious from his own reaction, that Enda was as thrilled as the supporters. The Shels players obviously got a right good talking to at half time judging by their body language as they exited the tunnel. But a Kevin O’Connor cruise missile of a goal, soon their mountain became a lot steeper. Naturally Shels bombarded De Town goal as the game progressed but again, the Town showed great resolve and true grit in holding out for a fantastic Easter Rising result. It was our first home league win since the autumn of 2015 and was greatly appreciated by all Town supporters in the stadium. The win also saw us jump up to 5th place. As the rain fell at the end of the game, the Shels manager vented his anger on the match officials both on the pitch and in the tunnel afterwards. But despite the falling rain, we went home happy that the Easter bunny had delivered three valuable points to a hungry team and set of supporters.

AWAY, AWAY AGAIN

It’s Shels again on Monday night, April 17th in Tolka Park with a 7.00pm kick off. Our third meeting in a short time, this game is in the EA Sports Cup Second Round. Then on Saturday April 22nd, we travel the long distance to the south coast to play Cobh Ramblers. The Cobh game has a 7.15pm kick off time and as usual will be played in St. Colman’s Park. They shocked us last time out with a comprehensive 3-1 win. But despite our incredibly long list of early casualties, confidence continues to grow and this game promises to be a real test of resolve.

And talking of away, away, some of the Murray family, Andy and Paddy were absent from our win on Saturday night so maybe, if they’d stay away more often, the results might be more favourable. Only joking, lads.

ACTIVE AVRIL

Our new chairperson, Avril Gilchriest is certainly active since she took over the role. Once again, she had organised a game at half time, this time the young talent of Killoe was on display. She also was on shop duty and has already organised some extra volunteers for the post Car Boot Sale operation. She’s some lady for one lady, our Avril.

JOIN US

It’s not too late to join the Supporters’ Club. As a matter if fact, it’s never too late. Just ask anyone behind the counter in the clubhouse and you’ll be sorted. Word has it that our Treasurer is shortly taking the Chinese takeaway very seriously.
