 History and folklore tells us that during the 1985 rugby triple-crown decider in Lansdowne Road in 1985 Ireland captain Ciaran Fitzgerald roared at his troops “where is your f.... pride”. We all know how that ended up!! For those younger Town supporters I’ll remind you:- Michael Kiernan raised the roof with a late dropped goal which ensured Irelands triple crown victory only their second since 1949.

Next Friday night at City Calling Stadium offers the people of Longford the opportunity to show their pride in their local League of Ireland team and raise the roof. The match kicks off at 8 pm and it could prove to be a historical occasion i.e. Longford Town FC’s first ever National league title secured at home!

As it stands at present Longford Town sit proudly at the top of the SSE Airtricity league First Division table. They are 4 points clear of their nearest rivals and a victory over Shamrock Rovers (B) will ensure a league title with only one game remaining.

Last season the people of Longford and surrounding counties showed that they cared when they turned up in large numbers for the playoff game against Bray Wanderers and helped make that a special occasion. Unfortunately that night ended in heartbreak for all at the Club.

However in sport there is always “another game” and with the great efforts of manager Tony Cousins, his players, a very hard working committee, wonderful sponsors and dedicated supporters Longford Town FC is now on the brink of promotion once again. Club chairman Jim Hanley stated “we have been there or thereabouts for a few years now and with the on-going developments both on and off the pitch we feel we are now ready to tale our place in the SSE Airtricity Premier league. I have every belief that Tony and his team will get over the line this time”.

Last year the business community of Longford town showed their pride in their local team by flying red and black flags throughout the town leading up to the game. All connected with the Club are hoping this will also happen in the coming days. Let’s work together to make the Town red and black for the week.

Longford often gets negative publicity in the national media, however this is an ideal opportunity for all true Longfordians (and a few blow ins!!) to show they have pride in their county and remind the outside word that we are a real community. Longford Town secretary Carmel Browne alluded to the fact that “we have been working for seven years behind the scenes at the club to get to this stage. The nerves are jangling already but I’m sure with the large vocal Town support at City Calling stadium on Friday night Tony and the lads will make it a memorable occasion for all present”.

Don’t forget to don the red and black, pack the drum kits and get to City Calling Stadium early on Friday night. (Gates open at 6:45). Your Club needs YOU.
